Child Protective Services (CPS)

Child Protective Services (CPS) actively involves the entire family when a case of child abuse or neglect is reported.  The staff examines the case and finds the best solution with the family.  CPS staff look at the situation, develop a plan of action, and ensure that community services are used.  The goal is to strengthen the family and create a permanent, safe home for the child.  The family may be defined as biological, relative, kinship, foster, or adoptive.

There are times when CPS has to use the legal system to protect the rights of a child.  If the child is at serious risk, the Juvenile Court will allow Job and Family Services to take custody.  After finding a safe place for the child to stay, a social worker will develop a plan to get the family back together.  If, after 12 months, the child's home is not safe, Job and Family Services will take away the rights of the parents and find a permanent home for the child through adoption.

* Note: ALL Abuse and Neglect referrals can be made to (800) 783-5070 ext. 267.
